Heating Engineering

If you have complaints of being too hot on the lower floors, and too cold on the upper floors, you have an imbalanced heating system caused by a poorly designed heat distribution system. We can solve any steam or hot water heat distribution issue that you have. We are heating consultants for 1 pipe steam, 2 pipe steam and two pipe vacuum steam systems. We can even correct 1 pipe and two pipe Paul systems, and we have been doing so for 30 years.

Banging steam pipes are not “NORMAL” though they are routinely accepted as “What it means to have steam heat”. The boiler’s job is to make steam, but it is the distribution piping that allows the steam to quietly and efficiently heat the building. Poor piping can lead to that annoying banging noise that you shouldn’t tolerate. Only a qualified professional heating consultant can analyze the issue and design a solution to “STOP THE BANGING”

Master venting, which was developed by Frank Gerety, is the first step to take in balancing a steam system. We have been “Master Vent” specialists for over 30 years, balancing steam systems with venting and Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRV) to eliminate overheating. Don’t settle on replacing your radiator air vents with adjustable ones, especially if you own a building that is more than two stories high. That is not Master Venting and it will not balance your heat distribution.

High heating bills are generally caused by three issues:

  • Operating a steam system at more than 1 to 2 pounds steam pressure
  • Operating a boiler that is too large for your building, thus wasting fuel and causing poor heat distribution. It is not uncommon for us to find boilers that are two to three times as large as they need to be
  • Operating a boiler that has not been cleaned up and tuned up for a while

Every steam or hot water radiator can be controlled individually with a Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRV). With TRVs installed, no one will ever complain of the temperature being too hot. The TRV enable each unit, and each room in a unit, to control their individual environment.
